Glass Stash

Dining tables seem to work as glue for the family. We say so, because it is usually the dining table around which families sit together to share their day’s adventures during meal times. The important point in all this is that always find a table that suits your needs best instead of just looking for the appearance of a dining table, which most people focus more on instead of its usefulness for you and your family. All furnishing stores offer a wide variety of dining tables, so much so that it look hard to make a choice. However, there are some common facts that need to be kept in mind while looking for a eating table.

First, you would want to decide the room where you want to keep the snacking table if you do not have a specific dining room. Take the dimensions of the snacking area in the room and make up your mind about the size of the dining table.

Think about the number of chairs for each family member and if you have guests around the house often, you might want to add a chair and two for them. So, get a size of the eating area that would accommodate everyone.

Also, think about the shape and material of the snaking table. There are many shapes for a dining table but a family with kids should take into consideration the fact that the dining table, ideally, should not have sharpened corners to ensure the safety of the kids as they might accidentally bump into it.

If you are choosing a glass dining table because it is the in thing these days, keep in mind its advantages and disadvantages. A glass table is easy to clean and gives an aura of spaciousness to the room. It is, however, fragile and not recommended for families with small kids. It scratches quickly though.

A wooden table is expensive if made of highest quality wood but has been always in use and there is not much danger of it going out of style. Also, it supports weight of an individual and if people press upon it, there is less chance of it breaking than the glass one.

Also, it bores scratches well and they usually look part of the table. It lasts long although it is hard to move around and stash away as it takes a lot of space.

After deciding the size and material of the table, think about the height, color and other aspects like that. You would want to go for a proper height one, as you do not want people to crouch over or to reach above to use the dining table. It should reach at least the abdomen of the average man while sitting down. The other thing is the color which should obviously match with the rest of the furniture. Finally, the appearance of the dinning table, it should be modern style according to standards such as Victorian or antique etc. Etc. But don’t get carried away on the appearance. Keep its real objectives in mind!

The Flower Pot Men was a British children’s programme, produced by BBC television, that first ran in the 1950s and 1960s and was then revived in the 2000s. Originally, the programme was part of a BBC children’s television series titled Watch with Mother, with a different programme each weekday, and all involving string puppets. The Flower Pot Men was the story of two little men made of flower pots who lived at the bottom of an English suburban garden. The characters were devised by Freda Lingstrom and Maria Bird. Three later stories were written by Hilda Brabban. The puppeteers were Audrey Atterbury and Milly Gibson. The voices and other noises were produced by Peter Hawkins, Gladys Whitred and Julia Williams.
The plot changed little in each episode. The programme always took place in a garden, behind a potting shed. The third character was Little Weed, of indeterminate species, somewhat resembling a sunflower or dandelion with a smiling face, growing between two large flowerpots. While the “man who worked in the garden” was away having his dinner, the two Flower Pot Men, Bill and Ben, emerged from the two flowerpots. After a minor adventure a minor mishap occurs; someone is guilty. “Which of those two flower pot men, was it Bill or was it Ben?” the narrator trills, in a quavering soprano; the villain confesses; the gardener’s footsteps are heard coming up the garden path; the Flower Pot Men vanish into their pots and the closing credits roll. The final punch-line was, “and I think the little house knew something about it! Don’t You?”.
The Flower Pot Men spoke their own, highly inflected version of English, called Oddle Poddle. However, the popular notion that they ever said “Flobbalob” or “Flobbadob” is an urban myth; if one listened carefully to their banter, one could hear words like “Loblob” (“lovely”) and “Flobberpop” (“flowerpot”), either of which could have given rise to the urban myth. At the end of each adventure, they would say bye-bye to each other and to the Little Weed – “Babap ickle Weed”, to which the Weed would inevitably reply with tremulous cadence “Weeeeeeeeeeed”. This language, like that of the Teletubbies in the 1990s, was invented by Peter Hawkins and was criticised for hindering children from learning proper English.[citation needed]
Legend has it that Hilda Brabban sold the rights to her stories to the BBC for a mere three guineas (?3 3/).
In 2001, a second series named Bill and Ben was produced for CBBC, this time involving stop-motion animation and full colour. However, many additions were implemented:
A mean rosebush with buds in the neighbours garden.
A magpie obsessed by shiny treasures, often just bottle caps.
A hedgehog.
A worm.
Weed is no longer a weed, but an enormous sunflower. Rather than whining, “Weed!”, she can now speak proper English. She appears to play an “earth mother” role to Bill and Ben.

Pipe Hand

Pipe Hand

Fixing a loose stem

Once in a blue moon a pipe smoker may be faced with a loose stem. Most of the time this problem will fix itself, but if the stem is so loose that it falls out, then something has to be done. Your best bet is to take the pipe to a tobacconist or send it to a repairperson. These people will have years of practice doing these repairs, and it will cost very little. It is very easy for an amateur to crack a shank when attempting to repair a pipe, as most of us, at one time or another will agree to that.

Nevertheless, if you are determined to do it on your own, first you have to determine what kind of stem is in the pipe. If the stem is Lucite, the easiest fix is to apply a very thin layer of clear nail polish to the tenon, allow this to dry *completely*, and then carefully sand the tenon to fit. A vulcanite stem, on the other hand, is a bit more complicated, as you will need to heat the tenon and expand it in some way. There are a number of ways to go about this procedure, but the best one is found below.

First, remove the stem from the pipe and insert a drill bit, using the end that fits into the chuck and try it for size. If it fits snugly into the tenon, the next size up is the one you will be using. Next, carefully heat the tenon over the flame (1/2 inch to 1 inch away) of a disposable lighter for a couple of minutes, rotate the tenon back and forth while moving he flame up and down (the intent is to soften the vulcanite, not melt it). Then take the drill bit and insert the end that goes into the chuck into the tenon. Push it in about 1/2 inch, be very careful to keep the tenon straight. Then while holding the pipe and bit with both hands, put it under cold water to cool down.

Fixing a stem that’s too tight

If the stem is still inserted in the pipe and is so difficult to remove that you fear your pipe may be damaged, then place the pipe in the freezer for several minutes. This works the vast majority of the time; however, if the stem still proves too difficult to remove, smoke the pipe, allow it to cool, and try to remove the stem again. If neither of these techniques work, then send the pipe to a reputable repair person.

If you do manage to remove the stem, place some sort of dry lubricant, such as graphite (from a soft pencil) or wax, on the tenon and attempt to reinsert the stem. If this does not provide satisfactory results, you will need to remove a small amount of material from the tenon. Wrap some very fine (400 grit or so) sandpaper or some “O” or finer grade steel wool around the tenon and twist the stem gently. Work very slowly and carefully, and check the fit frequently until it is satisfactory.
