Labels British

Why is it people from German or British?
ancestry in the United States are more likely to label themself as just "American".
for example you have Irish-Americans, Italian-Americans, Polish, Russian and whatever but you very rarely ever hear anyone calling themself British-american or German American. also German and British culture is not embraced or reserved as much as the others, especailly considering they, along with irish make up the vast majority of white America.
I think it largely has to do with when they came here. British immigrants speak English, and so assimilate quickly. Germans came in a large wave in the 1700's after the 30 years war. The country was devastated. When they arrived, they were slow to assimilate. Look at place names; Germantown PA, now part of Philadelphia (and no longer German) was largely German back in the 1700's. Dutchtown in Cape Girardeau County Missouri was founded not by Dutch, but Germans who were known as "dutch" men. The Pennsylvania Dutch are German. But as you observe, most Germans now no longer refer to themselves as German Americans. The Italians came here from about 1890-1930 and haven't had enough time to completely assimilate, but I think mostly have. I AM Italian American but don't think of myself that way, but my grandfather did, and that was what people called him. Some people like to keep such differences expressed. In the case of people outside the group, perhaps for superiority, for ones in the group ethnic identity. Old habits die hard.
