How can I delete unused items in my research window?

Since you didn't mention which search history you want to delete, I am giving you ways of clearing all types of searches.

MICROSOFT INTERNET EXPLORER
Click Tools in the menu bar, click INTERNET OPTIONS, click GENERAL, click CLEAR SEARCH HISTORY, click YES, click OK.
To prevent INTERNET EXPLORER from saving your searches in the future, you can do the following.
Click TOOLS, click INTERNET OPTIONS, click CONTENT at the top, CLICK AUTOCOMPLETE, uncheck the forms box, click OK.

CLEARING GOOGLE HOME PAGE HISTORY
When you just click on Google search box without typing anything in it, a list of all previously visited sites comes up. You just take the cursor to the site you want to delete and press delete on your keyboard. This way you can keep the sites that you want and delete others that you don't want.

GOOGLE TOOLBAR HISTORY
Click on SETTINGS, click OPTIONS, click SEARCH BOX SETTINGS. There you will see four small boxes, clear the last one by clicking on it.
Remember that this will only clear the google search history and not your browser's search history.

DELETING YAHOO HOME PAGE HISTORY
The record of search history which appears in the search box on Yahoo! home page is actually a feature controlled by your browser, not Yahoo!
If you have Internet Explorer as your browser, you may stop the search history from being generated by following the instructions below:
Select the the 'Tools' menu in Internet Explorer.
Select 'Internet Options', then select the 'Content' tab.
Under Personal information, click on the 'AutoComplete' box.
On the AutoComplete Settings window you can click the 'Clear Forms' box to delete your current history, or you can uncheck the Forms box to permanently stop the generation of the search history.

YAHOO TOOLBAR HISTORY
Click the BLUE DOWN ARROW in the yahoo search box, click OPTIONS, click CLEAR SEARCH HISTORY.
To prevent future yahoo searches from being saved, click the BLUE DOWN ARROW, click OPTIONS, click MORE OPTIONS and clear the boxes under the caption SEARCH BOX, click OK.

MSN
If you are on MSN then deleting INTERNET EXPLORER history will delete MSN history as well but for that you will need to sign out first and sign in again.

MOZILLA FIREFOX
Click on TOOLS, click OPTIONS, then PRIVACY, then HISTORY, then click CLEAR.
To prevent searches from being saved in the future
Set REMEMBER VISITED PAGES FOR THE Last X DAYS to zero and click OK.

Safari
Click HISTORY in the menu, click CLEAR HISTORY at the bottom of the menu.
