Cob Tobacco

Did the sheriff and Barn ever catch Opie smoking rabbit tobacco in his corn cob pipe?
Rabbit tobacco is gnaphilium obtusifolium. It grows wild throughout the South. It is commonly smoked or can be chewed or brew it as a tea. It has a wonderful aroma. Growing up I always heard of it being gathered and used in just such manners. It is often substituted for tobacco and contains no nicotine, And I have also heard it is great for respiratory problems. I am sure that I have seen every episode of The Andy Griffin Show and can not recall ever seeing Opie smoking rabbit tobacco, though my memory is far from infallible. For a boy of Opie's age on the show, it might be an expected thing for him to get into.
